What is chocolate made from?
Chocolate starts its journey on the cacao tree, where cocoa beans grow inside pods. These beans are picked, fermented, dried, and roasted. After roasting, they’re ground into a thick, dark paste called cocoa mass.
This mass is used to make different types of chocolate:
- Dark chocolate has lots of cocoa and very little milk.
- Milk chocolate has milk powder or condensed milk added.
- White chocolate doesn’t have cocoa solids—just cocoa butter, sugar, and milk.

Why does chocolate melt in your mouth?
